Liminality
Liminality (spring 2020), defined as a threshold, or the space between here and there, is a projection mapping project created through the course Integrated Media studio. Working in collaboration with the six other students in the class, we created content to map the front of Distribution Hall for Fusebox Festival 2020. The seven of us worked together to interpret the themes of the festival, liminality and multiverse, create our own world featuring a portal, or threshold, into the next world over the entrance to Distribution Hall that would run throughout the festival.
This project was originally meant to be realized in late April 2020 but moved to digital when the festival transitioned to an online format due to COVID-19.

The first step was to create mockups of the original design. Each person’s section was roughly six minutes long so we each used mockups to storyboard the progression of the our design minute by minute.
Just before the world changed, we were able to pre-visualize our content on a scale model with pico projectors.
The switch to an all digital workflow involved taking the 3D model from Vectorworks into Blender to generate UV maps, and then taking the model and maps from Blender into Mapping Matter. The pipeline concluded with Disguise to record a 30 second video pre-visualizing the content on the model of Distribution Hall following the ideal movement of an audience member. Despite the disappointing switch from realized design to all virtual, this was a great opportunity to learn uv mapping in Blender, projector calculations in Mapping Matter, and the basics 3D pre-visualization in Disguise.

For the final presentation of Liminality, a 360 degree video was created using Unity.
